Pylons of the Future

We have all seen the unattractive pylons that are scatter throughout our cities, towns, and country side. These Transmission Towers are used to support overhead electricity conductors for power transmission. But what if we could make these unappealing towers into something remarkable and beautiful?

clip_image002Transforming the mundane electrical pylons into works of art, Chio + Shine, a US architecture practice, has proposed a modern humanoid design. The proposal is to install these human-shaped pylons across Iceland. According to Choi + Shine “The pylon-figures can be configured to respond to their environment with appropriate gestures. As the carried electrical lines ascend a hill, the pylon-figures change posture, imitating a climbing person. Over long spans, the pylon-figure stretches to gain increased height, crouches for increased strength or strains under the weight of the wires.”

The standard pylon design would only require minimal alternations and therefore the costs would be kept low. With more pylons being built everyday to supply the increasing demand for electricity, what would you want the new ones to look like?
